Dizziniess
Balance is one of the first and basic functions developed in humans. It integrates information from three systems: VESTIBULAR, propioceptive and visual.
Dizziness is not a disease but a symptom that may be due to an organic, functional or psychological disorder. It is one of the most frequent causes of medical consultation in individuals over 65 years of age; it affects 40% of individuals over the age of forty and accounts for 10% of physician visits. It is highly incapacitating and may be incorrectly diagnosed in 80% of cases.
When patients claim to be “DIZZY” the diagnostic possibilities are varied and may include NEUROLOGICAL (1-3-32). and NON NEUROLOGICAL CAUSES (3-19).
VERTIGO (spinning sensation) is a neurological symptom and always points to a VESTIBULAR SYSTEM DISORDER. (anatomic structures and pathways extending from the inner ear to the central nervous system.).

Unfortunately many patients with dizziness go through different medical specialties. Neurologists have the responsibility to guide the diagnostic workup done by different medical specialists in order to achieve the correct diagnosis and adequate management.
