Treatment

The treatment of vertigo is varied and depends on what type of vestibular disorder is present. Treatment will only be appropriate once a correct diagnosis has been reached.

Maniobra EpleyTreatment may be simple or combined by way of drugs (3-34-35), vestibular rehabilitation (3-6-16-25-28-33-44) , surgery or psychotherapy (15-17).

BENIGN PAROXISTICAL POSITIONAL VERTIGO (3-4-10-16-25-28-33-36-37-44) is treated by applying manoeuvres guided by videonystagmography (Epley or Semont manoeuvres)

Balance is maintained by input coming from the Vestibular, Visual and Propioceptive systems. These three systems constantly provide information regarding postural orientation by means of eye movements, postural control, and locomotion.

Maniobra Semot There exists a complex network of anatomic pathways between the retina, the vestibular system and the cerebellum. These pathways transfer information from the visual system to the vestibular nuclei and permit compensation after vestibular disruption or injury.

On the basis of these physiological principles, vestibular rehabilitation exercises (6) are indicated in order to speed recovery by means of central compensation.
